Have a HP LaserJet 4515tn. Tray 1 is the fold out/bypass, tray 2 and 3 are 500-sheet drawers.
Tray 1 stays shut with no paper, unless someone needs to load special paper in there.
Tray 2 has preprinted form A loaded.
Tray 3 has preprinted form B loaded.
I've set each tray as letter-size, but each one has a different type of paper. IE: 1 = Plain, 2=Letter head and 3= Cardstock.
This used to do the trick, as we have an application that prints to the pre-printed forms to the specific trays. but now, when I try to send a job to tray 3 from the program, the printer reads "Load Tray 1 Plain Letter."
Any ideas on how I get this tray behavior to work again? I've mirrored the settings on a (working) 4350tn, but I'm obviously missing a step somewhere.

Does this happen to every form you're printing or just certain forms? Are you mixing XP machines with newer Win7 machines? We've seen this anomaly using newer windows HP Universal drivers. We discovered that some of our forms were slightly larger than the minimum required margins and by ticking Adjust Automatically (Crystal Reports) corrected the problem. You may be using a different report generator, but it might be a starting point.
I had a similar issue with an HP 4600. It was being caused by the physical switch on the tray itself. On the 4600, it is on the right side of the tray; a blue plastic catch that can be adjusted based on what type of paper is put in the tray. Mine was not lined up correctly, and kept sliding around. I rigged it to the proper paper, and it worked fine. I ended up replacing the drawer.
In Printing Preferences:
Try setting paper source from "Automatically Select" to "Printer auto select".
Side note: If you have installed the new universal print driver you should disable "Print Optimizations" I've had a string of problems with this(missing white space characters that throw off the format of the document). It tries to save time and memory but it just causes more problems than its worth.

Have the same model printer. Changing from automatically select to printer auto select like mentioned above usually does the trick. Also, we have some programs that when you print, if the user isn't paying attention, it sends it as plain or another undesired type of paper. Make sure that the actual printing function in the program is set correctly.

If I do a paper path test from tray 3, it prints fine. But when I print to tray 3 from the application, it still reads "Load Tray 1 Plain Letter"
Same settings/application/driver are working on a HP 4350tn right next to it. maddening!
Did you upgrade the app recently? We had a few users that had Adobe Pro 9 and when it autoupdated, it killed printing to the 4515's at different stations and different printers around the office.. We upgraded to Pro X and it worked. Does printing just to tray 3 work from any other application?
Do other programs try to print to tray 1 when you select tray 3, or is it only your one application?
We had a similar issue with printing out of our ERP where the printer was always expecting to print duplex. All it took was adding a line in the beginning that contained the code string disabling duplexing.
This is kind of a dead thread, but I recently had a problem with one user having their output always try from Tray 1.
There is a mix of PCL5 and PCL6 drivers, all Windows 7 64 bit, on a domain. The user in question was the only one this was happening to, even from a default install of the printer.
Today, the problem was found, after trying multiple different settings on the tray. The type of paper was set to Colored. Once we set it to Plain, it behaved as we wanted.

Осталось только выключить продукт компании HP, отключить его от питания, дать так постоять примерно минуту. После этого перезагрузите ПК, соедините оборудование и повторите процесс печати.
Способ 3: Отключение брандмауэра Windows
Иногда защитник Windows блокирует отправленные данных с компьютера на устройство. Связано это может быть с некорректной работой брандмауэра или различными системными сбоями. Способ 4: Переключение учетной записи пользователя
Рассматриваемая проблема порой возникает тогда, когда попытка отправки в печать производится не с той учетной записи пользователя Windows, с которой происходило добавление периферии. Дело в том, что каждый профиль имеет свои привилегии и ограничения, что приводит к появлению подобного рода неполадок. Способ 5: Восстановление Windows
Часто случается, что ошибки печати связаны с определенными изменениями в операционной системе. Самостоятельно обнаружить их достаточно сложно, однако состояние ОС можно вернуть, откатив все изменения. OK, in all seriousness, these messages are usually caused by settings in the document being printed. To troubleshoot:
On the computer trying to print, try a Windows test page (right click on printer, "printer properties," "print test page")
If you still get the message, chances are the problem is in the printer. If not, the problem is in the document, or possibly in printer (driver) settings on the computer
If someone comes up with a solution please let my users know. This affects us all the time and it happens on multiple printer brands/models!
HP's tray 1 is the manual bypass tray. Normally this message appears if the software is coded to print to tray 1 or if the document being printer is a different size than what is in the actual paper tray.
also possible it's set to manual feed from tray 1. which as stated is the bypass tray. your document should be printing to tray 2 or Auto select, not manual feed.
Your paper tray with all the paper is set to a SIZE other than what you are trying to print. So you get this message. Sometimes.. the little tabs that hold the paper in place (LEFT and RIGHT sides).. are off position. Take paper out, place it back in, slide the little tabs to tell it what size paper is in the tray.
Sometimes this can be also controlled by the printer settings. Under properties of the printer.. make sure the proper paper settings match what you are trying to print.
Also this can be that the PAGE YOU ARE PRINTING is defined within the application (like WORD) as the wrong size. So you have a 8.5 by 11 inch paper in the printer but you created a document with 11 x 15 inche size.. so the printer is smart enough to try to tell you to place the proper sized paper in the tray.
