A trip to London is never complete without a visit to the Tower of London. The site dates back to the 11th century and is guarded by the Yeoman warders, or Beefeaters.
King Henry VIII first introduced Beefeaters in 1485 1) when he used them as bodyguards. Their duties included looking after the prisoners in the Tower and guarding the Crown jewels. These days though, their main role is to act as guides for the many tourists 2) that visit the Tower every year. They also take care of the eight big black ravens 3) who live in the tower.
There are 37 Yeoman Warders at the Tower 4) who were in the armed forces for 22 years or more. They live in the Tower with their families. On 1st July 2007 a service woman, Moira Cameton, became the first female Yeoman Warder in the history of the institution.
The Beefeaters are most famous for their striking red and gold uniform, but they actually only wear this on formal occasions. Most of the time they wear a dark blue uniform with red trimmings.

I’d like to tell you about our last school trip to Borodino, 120 km away from Moscow. Every year the first Sunday in September a traditional war and history festival “Borodino’s Day” takes place there. On this day a segment of the historic battle is re-enacted by soldiers and horsemen in uniform. It was really great this year. Over 2,000 soldiers and 200 horses participated in the performance. Impressive battle scenes with many special effects were performed at the area of 50 thousand square metres. Mikhail Kutuzov and Napoleon Bonaparte appeared at the battlefield for the first time in the festival’s history. Everything looked like it was back to that epoch. The uniform, equipment and armament of both Russian and French armies of 1812 were all made by hands by members of war history clubs in Russia and abroad.

I am writing to you from Rome, Italy. I wanted to tell you about The Vatican, where the Pope lives, which is really its own country. St. Peter’s Basilica is there; did you know it is the largest cathedral in the world? The Vatican is protected by a group of men called The Swiss Guard. They wear the most amazing uniforms! They include pantaloon trousers and large puffy, long-sleeved striped suits. The colours are blue, red and yellow, so you can’t miss them. They wear matching boots and berets and white gloves. You must come here someday and see them for yourself.

I’d like to tell you about the ceremonial mounting parade of the Horse Guard and Foot Guard of the Russian Presidential Regiment taking place in the Moscow Kremlin. Ceremonial parade – gripping spectacle, which you can admire each Saturday since April until October on Kremlin Cathedral square, and each last Saturday of month on Red Square. Parade shows the bright and impressive elements of military ceremonial with the demonstration of combatant manuals of arms and horse «roundabout». The musical tracking of ceremony is performed by the presidential orchestra. All members of ceremonial mounting parade wear their beautiful colourful parade uniform. Guard mounting on Cathedral square is an old tradition, which existed already from the time of Ivan the Third. You must come here someday and see them for yourself.

Sandra, the Pop Star
Look, this is Sandra Connor’s picture when she was twenty-three. She was a pop singer then and she was a star. All music lovers listened to her songs. She flew to many countries and gave concerts there.
In those years Sandra lived in Europe, in the capital of Italy. She usually sang in the evenings and her days began very late, sometimes at one or two o’clock in the afternoon. She always had breakfast in bed and watched television. Then she drove her Ford to town. There she met her boyfriend and often went to the shops. She had a lot of time before the concert, so she could swim in the swimming pool, listen to music or go to her fitness club. She spoke on the telephone a lot, often with her family.
At eight she was ready for the concert. She knew and sang a lot of beautiful songs. Her concert usually finished at about eleven. After it she had dinner with her friends and then drove home. At home she went to bed at two or three a.m. At that time she was young and happy and never tired.
Now she is living in the USA in a very big house. Sandra often thinks about the young years of her life.
