«Тайны» употребления артикля в географии

В английском языке есть два типа артиклей: определённый и неопределённый. Неопределенный артикль — это a или an (если слово, перед которым он стоит, начинается с гласной буквы). Он берёт своё начало от слова one (один) и используется перед именами существительными единственного числа, при этом они должны быть исчисляемыми. Предметы, перед которыми используется этот тип артикля, неопределенны по контексту и неизвестны говорящему и слушателю. Другими словами, этот артикль значит «какой-то», «один из множества».
Уже из названия понятно, что определённый артикль the противоположен неопределенному. The произошёл от слова this (этот). Он может употребляться с существительными как единственного числа, так и множественного числа, как с исчисляемыми, так и c неисчисляемыми. Существительное, перед которым определенный артикль стоит, как правило хорошо известно или понятно из контекста слушателю. The значит — этот самый .

Вы ошибочно можете подумать, что если не подходит a ( an ), тогда можно смело использовать противоположный тип. Однако это не так. В английском языке есть такие случаи, когда артикль совсем не нужен. Его отсутствие перед существительными принято называть случаем употребления нулевого артикля. Таким образом, получается, что есть в английском особые правила использования каждого из трёх типов.
Сегодня мы вычленим только те моменты, когда нам нужен определённый артикль перед названиями рек, океанов, озер, стран, городов и т.д.

Определенный артикль the в географических названиях

Перед следующими географическими названиями есть необходимость ставить определённый артикль:

Когда артикль the не нужен

Перед следующими географическими названиями употребление определённого артикля не понадобится:

Части света, при условии, что они выражены через имена прилагательные

Northern (северная); eastern (восточная); south-eastern (юго-восточная)

Острова, взятые по отдельности

Shikotan, Crete

Названия регионов и стран, которые состоят из одно или двух слов

Italy, Greece, North Canada

Горы и вершины, взятые по-отдельности

Mountain Athos, Mountain Rushmore, Makalu

Озера, если вместе перед названием стоит lake (озеро)

Lake Ritsa, Lake Victoria

Города

Paris, Madrid

Водопады

Iguazu Falls, Angel Falls

Полуострова

Labrador Peninsula, Florida Peninsula

Материки

Europe, Asia

Штаты

Texas; California

Однако, нет правил без исключений. Существует небольшое количество случаев, когда по правилам с данными в списке географическими названиями артикль не нужен, но они представляют собой исключения из ряда правил, что выше.

Перед следующими названиями ставится определенный артикль (но есть тенденция к его опущению):
