Thanks for posting in the MSDN Forum.

It seems that you lost the object of the user folder. Do you ensure you have right to access that? Would you tell me whether you have opened the particular folder successfully before?

Have a good day,

We've confirmed that all folder permissions are granted as required. The user is still able to access the folders using the File->Open-> Other user's folders.

This worked fine on Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010 didn't have any issues until about 2 weeks ago, when the error mentioned in my previous post started to appear.

If the issue is object related, is there a way to fix it. so far, we've re-installed Outlook, re-created the profile (multiple times), removed and re-added her as delegate to the mailboxes. Also tried granting her access to a mailbox she did not previously have and the issue occured instantly.

I see this question seems to have died with no resolution, but I have the exact same issue on a corporate exchange server with outlook 2010. I can go to my desktop machine and open the same mailbox with no issues as well as the calendar associated with that mailbox.

Both machines are running Outlook 2010, slightly different versions. On my laptop, when I go to the mailbox I get "Cannot display the folder. Microsoft Outlook cannot access the specified folder location" and when I go to the calendar tab, the mailbox doesn't show up at all.

I can access the calendar using, File-->Open-->Other user folder and it works just fine. I get the below error in event viewer when I try to access the mailbox.

Also deleted the profile and recreated it, added and removed the mailbox, permissions, etc.

One such example is an error plenty of users have reported where they receive the following error:

Cannot expand the folder. There is not enough memory available to perform the operation.

This error usually appears when an Outlook messaging profile includes a Microsoft Exchange account that is configured to use Cached Exchange Mode. Additionally, it also happens when the Download Public Folder Favorites option is enabled, and you have lots of cached public folders.

As such, if you have around or more than 1,000 public folders, or when the cached public folders consume one gigabyte of space, you should be expecting similar error messages.

How do I solve the folder expansion error in Outlook?

1. Disable the Download Public Folder Favorites option

2. Delete the Download Public Folder Favorites folders

2.1 Delete all the Download Public Folder Favorites folders

  1. In the navigation pane. right-click the Shortcuts folder
  2. Select Advanced
  3. Select Empty items and subfolders from folder
    • Keep the default options
  4. Click OK

delete shared folder favorites

2.2 Delete only certain Download Public Folder Favorites folders

  1. In the navigation pane, expand the Shortcuts folder
  2. Right-click the Public Folder favorite that you want to delete
  3. Select Delete folder
  4. Keep the default options
  5. Click OK

delete certain shared folder favorites

By following these steps, you should be able to fix any folder expansion error that you may encounter in Outlook.

If you know of any other way to solve this problem, share it in the comments section below so that other users can try it, as well.

How to Solve “Cannot Expand the Folder” Error in Outlook PST File

MS Outlook is a popular application among businesses and individuals. It provides users with an effective way to communicate and manage emails from their computers. There are various reasons that can cause the above error. For starters, a corrupt PST file could be the reason. Outlook mailbox data can be damaged due to several reasons such as virus attack, an abrupt power loss while the application is in use, or software conflict. Storing the PST file in a shared drive where multiple users can access it increases the risk of mailbox data corruption.

Sometimes damage on the drive where the PST file is stored can make it impossible to access your mailbox data. When computer drives develop bad sectors, these memory units can be read or written. Bad sectors on a hard drive can be caused due to physical damage to the storage media. For instance, installing updated antivirus software on your machine and scanning it frequently ensures that your PST files are safe. PST files are designed to be domicile on standalone PCs.

Avoid hosting PST files on shared drives. Every user should have their own PST file. Besides guarding your hard drive against power surge and physical damage, it is advisable to replace old computers regularly. This may differ from one organization to another but the ideal time to change computer hardware would be after every five years.
