I use FM 9 and have a few paragraphs in Adobe Ming Std L chinese font in the document that I created. We recently upgraded to Acrobat Pro Extended 9 and Distiller 9. Now when I try to create pdf of the same file, the paragraphs with the chinese fonts are replaced with empty boxes. I receive the error:
Adobe PostScript software version: 3018.101
Adobe PDF Settings file read error in PDFX4 2008.joboptions:
/CheckCompliance out of range
I've checked the fonts and the chinese font is included in the distiller settings. The settings job option that i use is the same that worked with previous releases and it is set up to include: Embed All Fonts.
Can someone help address this issue?

The last writer who successfuly created a pdf of the file used FM 8, Acrobat Professional 8, and Distiller 8. As a new person on-board with the group here, my system was upgraded to release 9 for these apps. So to answer your questions 1 and 2, FM 8 was used with Arobat Pro 8 and Distiller 8 and the chinese fonts were displaying fine in pdf output.
I have applied all of the updates for FM 9 and Acrobat 9 on my system. The OS I have is Windows XP, 5.1.2600 Service pack 3 Build 2600. I did a system check for upgrades to Windows and there was no mention to need to upgrade for a hotfix for PostScript printing. Most of the patches were for Windows security.
I hope I was able to answer your questions so you can further help.
I downloaded and ran the hotfix. I recreated the pdf for the file and the fonts are still not displaying. In reading some of the blogs, there seem to be a problem with Distiller 9 not being compatible with PDFX4. Is there a way to change the setting for the output to bypass this format? Yes, I rebooted after the hotfix.I removed the FNTCACHE.DAT file as you instructed and restarted. After I recreated the pdf, there is no change in the chinese font display. The text is replaced with boxes (unknown characters?).
I ran the Preflight report and can send the file if there is a way to attach it to this message. The results indicate PDF document is not compliant with PDF/X-4.

Thanks so much for this informative thread. When I had FrameMaker 8 and Acrobat 8 (TCS1), I never got any errors, let alone this one. Since the installation of TCS2, with Frame 9, Acrobat 9 Extended AND Photoshop, this error popped up with my first Convert to PDF. I selected the checkbox you specified (convert CYMK/RBG setting) and while I still get the error, the conversion process does successfully complete. Hurrah! Upon completion, I get the following Frame message:

Save as PDF failed to post-process the PDF file for Reflow: Unable to save the reprocessed PDF file.
The PDF file should be intact and usable but may not reflow properly. Check that the destination PDF file is not in use or its permissions, then Save as PDF again. If the problem persists, please contact Adobe Technical Support.
There error message you receive when Adobe is processing the pdf file (Save as .pdf) is only an error message; annoying, yes, but still ONLY a message; the pdf will still continue to build. Close the error message box and wait. Granted the bug causes the software to take a long time, but it doesn't prevent it (mine takes about 4 minutes depending on the file size and the graphics involved.
Checking the CYMK/RGB convert box does nothing but speed the process somewhat. It may seem like it is fixing the problem, but it's only a coincidence. Checking this box does, however, causes another error message to pop up instead - so it's a trade-off. The urban legend about this check box is that it causes some type of compatibility with [or reversion to] Frame 8; pure nonsense! Acrobat has used the same pdf port drivers/converters for years - it's simple driver software. This is an Acrobat issue and has NOTHING to do with FrameMaker whatsoever!
Look! Just be patient -- your pdf will generate, give it time. The problem is in the postscript (.ps) and Adobe has "supposedly" solved the problem with a patch for CS5, which will probably cause other issues.
Oh, and if you've been told NOT to remove previous versions of Acrobat. LIES! Before installing Acrobat 9 Pro Extended, REMOVE ALL PREVIOUS VERSIONS OF ACROBAT AND DISTILLER. Keeping previous versions will only cause printer port conflicts because previous versions of Acrobat and Distiller don't let go of their port assignments in the registry easily.
And be careful of the "Sticky Fingers" virus (validated July 2010). Acrobat 9 Pro Extended security protocols are very susceptible to it.

Hi, I have the following case. When I try to print (create) a PDF using Office or any other Windows application that can print, I get the following error: "Adobe PDF Settings file read error in :C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings\Standard.joboptions". I tried to do what you have proposed in similar cases but didn't work. I have Adobe Acrobat Standard 10.1.6 and I have had this problem since my update to this version. I cannot print even with different settings than the "Standard.joboptions".

You are on Windows 7 or Windows 8. You don't have the permissions to change the files in that location with your current user account. You may want to try creating a new account with admin priveleges and then see if it works. If it does then your profile is hosed. If not then you might want to reinstall Acrobat.

From your current account, try seeing if you can access the items in the folder. If not, you might check the permissions and possibly change the permissions for that folder.

Hi Sabian, I work on a Windows 7 notebook.
Hi Bill, I can access these files, but I don't have the permission to change their properties (read-only, hidden). Actually my PC belongs to a domain. I don't know if that helps.

Try opening the files in either Distiller or the Adobe PDF Printer and then Save them as a custom setting. The new files get saved to your user profile. ( C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings ) You don't have to change them at all except for the name. Then you should be able to access all of the regular settings. That item taken care of it appears that whoever administers your domain did not set the folder permissions correctly. You and others probably have the same problem on the domain.

Try launching Adobe Distiller.
Do you see Job options in Adobe Distiller?
If not, please check if you see parser failure message in Adobe Distiller.

В соответствии с готовыми настройками делается постскрипт из индизайна. Потом он превращается в PDF с помощью Acrobat Distiller (в котором тоже используются свои готовые настройки).
На каком этапе возникают вопросы? Не очень понимаю, причем тут виртуальный принтер, без него вполне можно обойтись.

я ни разу не писала PostScript, тоесть, мне нужно сначала из индизайна сохранить пдф, а потом как? открыть дистиллер и что дальше? можете по-шагово объяснить?_MBK_

Нет. Сперва из индизайна напечатать PS файл а потом отдистиллировать его в PDfcementary
Сначала из индизайна напечатать postscript, потом открыть дистиллер, выбрать необходимые .joboptions и перенести на окошко дистиллера получившийся файл. Ну или двойной клик по файлу – дистиллер сам запустится (но тогда joboptions выбрать не успеете). После работы дистиллера pdf-файл появится в той же папке, где лежит postscript. Или (если возникла ошибка) появится logValentin
Неправильно согласно требованиям Вашей типографии.
1. Надо установить виртуальный принтер в систему, AdobePDF например, со своими настройками.
2. Из Индизайна печатаем на этот принтер Вашу работу. получаем *.ps "пишем PostScript"
3. Конвертируем полученный файл в PDF с помощью Acrobat Distiller.
В Acrobat Distiller предварительно подставляются настройки выданные типографией.
4. Отдаем PDF типографии.
Это "классический" путь привязанный скорее всего с старому программному обеспечению RIP, с помощью которого типография делит на пленки/пластины Вашу работу.

Settings->Add Adobe Pdf Settings->указываете, где joboptions
а потом кидаете полученный ps-файл на окошко Distiller

Сохранить ПДФ из ИнДизайна, безусловно, правильное решение. Но типография явно требует от вас несколько иного. У них могут быть на то свои причины, поэтому не углубляемся в дебри вопроса "а нафига?".
А. Как сделать PostScript из InDesign-овского файла:
Выбираем команду File/Print. Да, ту самую, которой вы пользуетесь, чтобы распечатать документ на обычном принтере.
Шаг 1: Вместо настоящего принтера выбираете "PostScript File"
Шаг 2: Выбираете ту PPD, которая нужна типографии. Где ее взять и как ее установить, к сожалению, не могу ответить, так как не знаю ни о типографии, ни о ее требованиях, ни о том, на какой машине вы работаете, совершенно ничего. В принципе, PPD с названием adobe PDF должно быть достаточно.
Шаг 3: Приводите настройки печати в соответствие с требованиями типографии. Что именно там ставить -- должны ответить они, коллективный разум форума протелепатить это не сможет.
Шаг 4: Нажимаете кнопку "Save" и сохраняете полученный поскрипт-файл. Осмысленно сохраняете, он еще пригодится.
Б. Как сделать PDF из имеющегося PostScript-а:
Запускаем Acrobat Distiller (обычно лежит в той же папке, что и сам Acrobat)
Шаг 1: В разделе Default Settings выбираем нужный набор настроек. Его тоже должна предоставить типография (вопрос "они дали мне непонятный файл бла-бла-бла.joboptions, что с ним делать?" тоже пока опустим, мало данных о системе). Или же должна сказать, каким именно из стандартных наборов нужно пользоваться.
Шаг 2: Теперь, собственно, нужно отдистиллить имеющийся постскрипт. Иногда достаточно просто бросить иконку файла на окно Acrobat Distiller, иногда приходится пользоваться командой File/Open, это неважно, результат будет одинаков. В той же папке, где лежит исходный постскрипт (файл с расширением .ps), появится нужный нам PDF-файл. Имя его будет таким же, как у постскрипта, а расширение -- .pdf.
Например, в моем случае из файла test1.ps получился файл test1.pdf
Этот файл неплохо бы еще просмотреть с помощью Adobe Acrobat прежде, чем отдавать в типографию.
